Where is Surrogacy Legal in 2016 ?

Surrogacy is for many couples the only solution to have a family. But now, with India, Thailand and Mexico closing their doors to foreign people coming for surrogacy, there are only a few windows for those who want to have a child.
The first attested case of surrogacy goes back to the 1970s, being also the first legal surrogacy agreement was enacted in New Jersey. Over the years surrogacy has become a more successful procedure and process, being a solution not only for heterosexual couples with infertility problems, but also for gay couples and single men and women who want to become parents.

Over the last years many people chose to cross the border to have access to affordable surrogacy and laws that made the entire process really easy. For example people in the UK choose surrogacy abroad because in their country the law allows surrogates to change their mind at any point and decide to keep the child they are carrying, while in the US the prices are excruciating (sometimes even more than $150,000).
The most important destinations for surrogacy were Mexico, India, Thailand, Georgia, Nepal, Ukraine, Russia, UK and some states in the US.

Thailand closed its doors to foreigners coming here for surrogacy after the baby Gammy case, the child born with Down's syndrome who was not wanted by the Australian intended parents, who took only his healthy  twin sister back home.
The state of Tabasco, Mexico banned surrogacy, limiting the service only to local couples. Their decision was made to avoid impoverished women in the country from being exploited.
The Nepali Supreme court has issued an injunction suspending surrogacy for foreigners across the country, because there are currently no laws regarding surrogacy, raising many constitutional and legal questions.
The Indian government has also considered that poor, illiterate women are being exploited, banning surrogacy for foreigners, but allowing it for locals. Over the past years many surrogacy clinics were opened, turning this process into an unregulated business.
PlacidWay can help you access affordable and safe surrogacy packages in renowned clinics located in surrogacy friendly countries. All the clinics are authorized and completely legal, so that anyone who wishes to have a child through surrogacy can have a pleasant experience with no legal issues.

Where is international surrogacy still legal?

Where is international surrogacy still legal

Where is international surrogacy still legal?

Travelling abroad for surrogacy is for many couples the only solution to have a family.

What is surrogacy?
Through surrogacy a woman (known as surrogate mother) accepts to carry and give birth to a child for another couple or person. The surrogate gives up all her rights upon that child. There are two types of surrogacy:
Traditional surrogacy. The surrogate is artificially inseminated with the father's sperm. She then carries the baby and delivers it for the parents to raise. A traditional surrogate is the baby's biological mother, because it was her egg that was fertilized by the father's sperm. Donor sperm can also be used for a traditional surrogacy.
Gestational surrogacy. In Vitro Fertilization makes it possible to harvest eggs from the mother, fertilize them with sperm from the father, and place the embryo into the uterus of a gestational surrogate. A gestational surrogate has no genetic ties to the child. That's because it wasn't her egg that was used. A gestational surrogate is called the "birth mother" but the biological mother is the woman whose egg was fertilized.
Because the contract for traditional surrogacy is more complex (the surrogate has to give up her rights upon the child, who will be adopted by the intended parents) and because many couples do not want the surrogate mother to be linked to the child in any way, most of them choose gestational surrogacy. When one of both intended parents have fertility issues so no eggs or no sperm can be used from them, they have the option to choose an egg or a sperm donor.
In the US the price for surrogacy varies from $80,000 to $120,000 and the cost is determined by a wide range of factors such as: medical insurance for the surrogate, if the parents have to buy a surrogacy-pregnancy policy for her, medication, tests for the surrogate, etc.

Surrogacy abroad

Surrogacy is a fertility procedure, and usually the last hope for couples or singles who want to have a baby and have previously tried other fertility methods with no results. Surrogacy consists in a treatment in which a surrogate mother carries another individual's or couple's child. The surrogate mother will help the couple/single unable to carry a child due to certainreasons.

Embryo cryopreservation is a common, renowned fertility method that preserves eggs (also known as oocytes) for infertility procedures. Embryo cryopreservation is also preserving embryos in a frozen state for future use.
Couples who attempt infertility treatments often use the embryo cryopreservation. This mostly happens to those who have to undergo multiple cycles in order to achieve a pregnancy. Cryopreservation techniques are beneficial to patients undergoing medical treatments (like cancer treatments) that can affect and/or destroy their fertility potential, or couples who want to preserve their eggs/sperm for pregnancy in the near future.

IVF and Surrogacy Clinic IVF Treatment Package

For three decades, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has facilitated millions of couples worldwide to get pregnant, even when the odds seemed to be uncooperative. In fact worldwide, more than 3 million children have been conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF brings new hope when other infertility treatments become unproductive. It eradicates any obstacles between sperm and egg by uniting them in a lab. The developing embryos are then placed inside the woman or surrogate’s uterus. Experiencing IVF can be unpleasant both physically and emotionally. It can also be expensive, costing USD $12,400 with an average cycle. Before you take the journey to become pregnant, it's important to seek out a good fertility clinic. Tubal Ligation Procedure in Mexico – Why Is It Worth It To Go Abroad?

Tubal Ligation in Mexico
Tubal Ligation Procedure in Mexico – Why Is It Worth It To Go Abroad?

The tubal ligation is the method by which the both fallopian tubes are sectioned and tied. Located on both sides of the uterus, the fallopian tubes function to retrieve the egg expelled by the ovary once a month at the time of ovulation and directs it toward the uterus. After its fertilization with the sperm that arrived into the uterus succeeding sexual intercourse and their following movement, they, the fetus will start developing inside the uterus. By interrupting communication between the fallopian tubes and the uterus, the expelled ovary egg will not be able to reach into the uterus and the fertilization will not occur.
The tubal ligation is an effective and permanent form of contraception. It’s a relatively simple surgery which prevents the sperm to reach the egg, fertilize it and to experience pregnancy. Usually, the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, and recovery takes several days.
This method is suitable for women who don’t want more children, or for those who don’t want children at all. The patient has to accept that once intervention is made, she will most likely not be able to have children.
The procedure can be done in several ways.
First, doctors use one of two methods for examining reproductive organs:
  • Laparoscopy - this is the most common method. The doctor makes a small incision in the abdominal wall through which inserts a laparoscope (a long, thin tube containing a camera), which allows seeing the fallopian tubes. Additional incisions may be made for the introduction of other instruments, such as surgical scissors.
  • Minilaparotomy. This method involves a smaller incision than laparoscopy, above the pubic hairline. The fallopian tubes are removed from the abdomen through the incision in order to be handled and then put back in their place. This procedure may be appropriate for women who have recently given birth or had undergone abdominal or pelvic surgery.
Then, there are several methods to block the passage within the fallopian tubes:
  • Partial salpingectomy: is the most common method; it involves cutting and tying or sewing a portion of the fallopian tube.
  • Implementation of a clip: a small guesthouse, made from plastic or titanium is used for clamping the lumen tube and closing it.
  • Rings of silicon: a small portion of the fallopian tube is drawn through a stretched silicone ring, which will compress the tube in a normal position.
  • Electrocoagulation: this method uses a harmless electric current that burns a small portion of each fallopian tube and seals them.

Patients travel to Mexico to undergo Tubal Ligation
Why do patients from the US and Canada travel to Mexico to undergo tubal ligation?
A growing number of American and Canadian patients are choosing to go abroad for undergoing the tubal ligation procedure. More and more of them are receiving this treatment in foreign countries. Mexico is one of the destinations that people from the US and Canadians visit the most in their search for flawless, safe and affordable tubal ligation.
Frustrated by high prices, lack of insurance and lengthy wait time for this surgery, people choose to cross borders to Mexico, where they find flawless health care systems, qualitative medical care, advanced medical facilities, renowned doctors, high tech equipment and great outcomes. The affordability of the tubal litigation is another major factor that makes them travel to Mexico. So they end up paying significantly less compared to what they would spend in their home country. And the reduced cost includes the round trip plane tickets, the hotel accommodation and the procedure itself.

Benefits of the tubal ligation procedure in Mexico
  • It’s done within a safe, professional and caring environment
  • It’s has an affordable cost, while the medical care is top notch
  • It’s performed by a highly trained and experienced team of doctors
  • Offers permanent protection against the following possible pregnancies
  • Adverse effects are minimal
  • Libido is not affected
  • Particularly protects women who have health problems and who could not carry a pregnancy
  • Does not affect hormone levels or menstruation

All in all, Mexico has plenty of options for patients from Canada and US who opt for the tubal ligation surgery. The decision is, indeed, not easy and should be based on solid research and determination.
Undergoing the tubal ligation procedure should be carefully considered and discussed with specialized professionals. While there are not many contraindications, the surgery isn’t recommended if the patient and her partner are not absolutely sure or if they are facing a stressful situation, such as immediately after a birth, miscarriage or an abortion.

PlacidWay is a medical tourism company that helps patients from US and Canada choose from a wide range of tubal ligation packages offered by renowned medical centers in Mexico. By requesting a free quote, patients will receive all the information they need within 48 hours, followed by continuous assistance and support, in order to take the most suitable decision and make the best out of their medical trip.
